Pam Bondi came to the Trump cabinet with a well-documented track record. In 2013, as Florida's Attorney General, she received a $25,000 donation from the Trump Foundation and then quietly declined to join a multistate investigation into Trump University fraud allegations. The check cleared. The case went away.
That pattern followed her to the Department of Justice. As Attorney General, Bondi oversaw a DOJ that functioned as a political instrument rather than an independent law enforcement agency. Career prosecutors raised internal objections about pressure to close investigations into Trump allies, reduce sentences for political associates, and drop cases that inconvenienced the administration.
The most visible examples included the DOJ's reversal on sentencing recommendations for figures connected to January 6th, the resignation of career attorneys who said they were pressured to compromise prosecutorial independence, and Bondi's own public statements dismissing investigations of administration officials as politically motivated witch hunts.
She also oversaw the DOJ's aggressive pivot toward weaponizing federal law enforcement against the administration's perceived enemies: journalists, political opponents, and critics. The institution that is supposed to be the nation's independent referee became, under Bondi, a tool of the president who appointed her.
Bondi was ousted from the cabinet in April 2026, joining Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as the second cabinet departure of Trump's second term. Her exit was abrupt. The official explanation was vague. The pattern is not.
The donors got what they paid for. The question now is what, if anything, can be rebuilt of the institution she left behind.
