Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Department of Health and Human Services blocked publication of taxpayer-funded FDA research finding COVID-19 and shingles vaccines are safe, with serious side effects extremely rare. The scientists did the work. The data backed them up. Then the administration made sure no one would read it.
What the Research Found
FDA scientists spent millions in public dollars working with data firms to analyze millions of patient records. Their conclusion: serious side effects from both COVID-19 shots and Shingrix, the shingles vaccine, are extremely rare. Two COVID vaccine safety studies were accepted by peer-reviewed medical journals. They were never published. In February, top FDA officials refused to sign off on submitting Shingrix study abstracts to a major drug safety conference. Those disappeared too.
The research cost taxpayer money to conduct. The taxpayer never got to see the results.
The Official Explanation
An HHS spokesperson offered this: the studies "were withdrawn because the authors drew broad conclusions that were not supported by the underlying data." The agency claimed the FDA "acted to protect the integrity of its scientific process."
Former CDC official Dr. Fiona Havers read it differently. "HHS leaders now have a clear pattern of blocking high-quality studies that include results that don't support their overall anti-vaccine narrative," she told reporters. "This censorship of taxpayer-funded science is extremely concerning."

The Pattern Under RFK Jr.
This is not a one-off decision. Under Kennedy, HHS has softened COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, cut funding for vaccine research and development, and attempted to overhaul the childhood immunization schedule. A federal judge blocked several of those changes in March after a legal challenge. HHS has since appealed. Senate HELP Committee Chairman Bill Cassidy, a Republican physician from Louisiana, has publicly flagged what he described as bias in the newly constituted vaccine advisory panel.
Kennedy built his public reputation on vaccine skepticism. He is now the cabinet secretary overseeing the agency responsible for ensuring vaccines are safe and the public can trust the science behind them.
The Bottom Line
The government paid scientists to do their jobs. The scientists did them. The results showed vaccines work and are safe. The administration buried the answer, cited integrity, and kept moving. A political operation is running through a federal health agency, dressed up in the language of scientific integrity, and every American who depends on the FDA to tell the truth is paying for it twice: once in taxes, once in the information they will never receive.
