Ukraine Hits Two Russian Warships Worth $150M in Sevastopol. Europe Responds.

Ukrainian military intelligence struck two Russian large landing ships in Sevastopol Bay on the night of April 18-19, 2026, disabling both vessels and dealing a significant blow to Russia's Black Sea Fleet. The ships, the Yamal and the Nikolai Filchenkov, are estimated at approximately $150 million combined. Neither has been operational since the strike.

Ukraine's GUR intelligence directorate published video of the attack. Both are large landing vessels capable of deploying troops, vehicles, and amphibious assault equipment. Removing them from service limits Russia's ability to project force along Ukraine's coastline.

Not the First, Not the Last

The Crimea operation is part of a sustained campaign. On April 8, Ukrainian drones hit Russia's largest oil terminal at the port of Feodosia in occupied Crimea. On April 22, GUR confirmed damage to a Project 22460 FSB border patrol ship and a radar installation at Sevastopol's combat control center.

The pattern is deliberate: Ukraine is systematically degrading Russia's ability to use Crimea as a forward operating base. Russia responded on April 17 by threatening European countries and industries that fund Ukraine's long-range drone production. The threat was a signal of how much the strikes are hurting.

Europe Responds With Real Commitments

Germany announced a 300 million euro investment in Ukraine's long-range strike capability the same week. Norway signed a joint drone production agreement with Ukraine and donated 560 million euros to support frontline operations. Combined, Germany and Norway committed more than 860 million euros in a matter of days.

That is not symbolic support. Long-range strike capability is precisely what allows Ukraine to hit targets in Crimea, Taganrog, and Russian oil infrastructure. Germany's investment will expand that capacity further. Norway's drone production agreement means Ukraine will eventually manufacture more of the weapons it needs domestically.

Washington's Silence

The European response contrasts sharply with Washington's posture. The Trump administration has been largely absent from Ukraine support this week. Secretary of State Rubio walked away from ceasefire talks after Washington pressed Kyiv to formally concede Crimea, territory Russia has illegally occupied since 2014. There has been no new U.S. military aid announcement to accompany the European commitments.

Europe is carrying the weight right now. That is worth saying plainly.

The Battlefield Numbers

Russia's estimated total combat losses from February 24, 2022 through April 24, 2026 stand at approximately 1.32 million personnel. On April 23 alone, 194 combat engagements were recorded across the front lines, with the highest activity in the Pokrovsk and Huliaipole sectors.

Russian forces suffered a net territorial loss of approximately 2 square miles during the March 24 to April 21 period. The front lines have not moved dramatically. Ukraine is not collapsing. The question is whether Western support, now primarily European, holds long enough for the math to shift further.

When Kyiv can hit a $150 million warship in an occupied bay, it is demonstrating that the war's geography is not fixed. Slava Ukraini. Heroyam slava.
